Situated 1650 mtrs above the sea level Almora also called a town of temple spread across a 5-km ridge is one of the most beautiful hill stations in Uttarakhand state. It is surrounded by forests, pine and fir trees, with snow draped Himalayas as its background. It was the capital of Kumaon during the reign of the Chand Rajas in the 16th century. In 1790 it was taken over by the Nepali Gorkhas and later passed into British hands in 1815.

Almora is also called a town of temples with the temple of Goddess Nanda Devi in the centre of town.

Nearest airport is Pantnagar, which is about 125 km away from the heart of Almora.


By Train
Nearest railway station is at Kathgodam. Kathgodam railway station to Almora city is about 91 km, which can be covered by nearly 3 hours.
 

By Road
Overnight deluxe super fast buses connect Almora to Delhi. Almora is also connected to other Kumaon destinations by bus.

Must See in Almora
Chitai Temple: The temple is 8km walk through pine forest and is dedicated to Lord Golu an incarnation of Gaur Bhairav. The people of Kumau worship him. Once a wish is fulfilled people hang little bells in this temple. Therefore there are thousands of little bells hanging there.

 

Kosi Temple (10 kms): The temple, one of the earliest Sun temple in India was built in the 12th century by the Katyuri dynasty.


Bright End Corner - 2 km from Almora near Vivekananda Memorial is the sunset and the sunrise point from where you can have a panoramic view of Himalayan peaks.

Katarmal - 7 km from Almora this 800-year old Sun Temple is the second in importance after the Sun Temple of Konark in Orissa.


Jageshwar - 34 kms away from Almora this temple of Shiva is situated amidst a dense Deodar forest.

Bageshwar - 90 kms from Almora, Bageshwar is the trade center of Kumau. Founded in 1450, on the banks of the river Sarayu, it has a temple of Baghnath.

Nanda Devi Temple - This 1000-year old temple with wall carving is one of the main attraction of Almora.  Every year a dance festival is held here in which youths from various nearby areas particpate.

Kasar Devi - 6 km from the town Near Kalimutt is the temple of Kasar Devi. This ancient temple was built on a mountain peak in the second century. The distance between Kalimatt and Kasar Devi is less than 1 km and can be easily covered by foot.


Gannath - 47 kms from Almora this is an ancient Shiva temple with natural caves. 2116 mts above sea level this place is a favourite with nature lovers.

State Museum -This museum is near the bus stand . It is closed on Mondays and other Government Holidays. It is open from 10:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.
