AMARNATH
5000 year old Amarnath
caves situated at an altitude of 12756 ft (3688 m) in Jammu &
Kashmir state is one of the most famous shrines in Hinduism, dedicated to the
God
Shiva and forms an important part of Hindu mythology. Amarnathji is considered to be one of the major Hindu Dhams. The holy cave is the abode of Lord Shiva. The guardian of the absolute, Lord Shiva, the destroyer, is enshrined in the form of an ice-lingam in this cave. This lingam is formed naturally. This lingam is said to grow and shrink with the phases of the moon, reaching its height during the summer festival. According to Hindu mythology, this is the cave where Shiva explained the secret of life and eternity to Parvati. 2 other ice formations represent Parvati and Shiva's son, Ganesha.
As Amarnath Yatra takes place for just a few days in a year, you need to do the necessary preparations in advance which includes the prior registration. Due to heavy security reasons, you cannot take Amarnath Yatra without taking the permission from Government of India. A prior Amarnath Yatra registration is must. There are two routes for Amarnath Yatra. One is the traditional route along the Srinagar Highway via Pahalgam and the other route is via Baltal. The Pahalgam route is 34 kilometers and longer than the other one and it take 3 full days to cover the route. Its better to take the Amarnath Helicopter package instead of making all the necessary preparations on your own.
The holy shrine of Amarnath can be reached by taking two routes. The traditional and more popular route starts at Pahalgam about 96 km from Srinagar and the second route of the Amarnath Yatra begins at Baltal which is ahead of Sonamarg some 115 km from Srinagar.
