Bekal is small town on the eastern shore of Kerala with golden expanse of a beautiful beach surrounding the fort, backwaters and hill destinations and water sport facilities nearby. Shaped like a giant keyhole, the historic Bekal Fort which is more than 350 year old offers a superb view of the Arabian Sea from its tall observation towers, which were occupied by huge cannons, couple of centuries ago.


The imposing fort at Bekal is one of the largest and best preserved forts in Kerala. The beautiful expanse of the shallow beach near the Bekal fort known as Bekal Fort Beach has been developed as an exotic beach location by the Bekal Resorts Development Corporation (BRDC).

By Air
Nearest airport to Bekal is Mangalore, which is about 50 km from Bekal. Calicut Airport is about 180 km.


By Train
Nearest major railway stations are Kasargod and Kanhangad, both are about 12 km away from Bekal.

By Road
About 16 km South of Kasaragod on the national highway, Bekal is connected with all major towns in Kerala.

Chandragiri Fort - Built during the 17th century by Shivappa Naik and situated above 150 feet above seal level on the bank of Chandragiri river for defence of his kingdom, is an ideal plce to watch sunrise and the sunset. The fort changed hands over the years to Hyder Ali of Mysore and then to the British East India Company. Today it is a protected monument under the State Archaeology Department.


Kappil Beach - Five km away is Kappil Beach . Vast, remote and secluded, it is refreshingly different from popular beach destinations in its inspiring settings and ambience. Nearby is the Kodi Cliff that looks as if it sprang straight out of the sea. Take in one of the most panoramic views of the sea from here.

 

Ananthapura Temple - 30 km from Bekal Fort near Kumbla is the only Lake temple in Kerala. Built in the 9th century, the temple is considered to be the original seat of Lord Anantha Padmanabha (Lord Vishnu).


Hosdurg Fort - Further down, 15 km away from Bekal is the Hosdurg Fort – a chain of forts built by Somasekhara Nayak of the Ikkeri dynasty

 

Valiyaparamba Island - Valiyaparamba is a small island about 30 km and an hour’s drive from Bekal in Kasaragod that is one of the most scenic backwater stretches in north Kerala. Fed by four rivers and dotted with numerous little islands, Valiyaparamba is a much-favoured backwater destination that offers enchanting boat cruises to its visitors. The National Waterway passes through the island of Valiyaparamba which is a favourite destination of the houseboat cruises.
The nearest railway station is Cheruvathur, on the Kozhikode-Mangalore route, about 5 km from Valiyaparamba. National Highway (NH 17) passes through Cheruvathur.
 

Kanwatheertha Beach - Located 3 km from Manjeswaram, is a large swimming pool-like formation of the sea on the beach.


Azhithala Beach - Serene, secluded and punctuated with casuarinas trees, Azhithala Beach , located 25 km to the south of Bekal, is the ideal setting for long walks and lazing around

Ranipuram - Located 750m above sea level on the Western Ghats this mountainous terrain is known for trekking and green landscapes. This hill station lies 55 km from Bekal Fort is popular as adventure hot spot. Formerly known as Madathumala, Ranipuram's extensive forests merge with those of the nearby State of Karnataka .
