CALICUT (Kozhikode)

Kozhikode also known as Calicut lies along the malabar coast and is the third largest city in Kerala.
 

Kozhikode in early ages was known as the "City of Spices" for its role as the major trading point of eastern spices. It was the capital of an independent kingdom ruled by the Samoothiris (Zamorins) in Middle Ages and later of the erstwhile Malabar district under British rule. Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed at Kozhikode on May 20, 1498. A Portuguese factory and fort was intact in Kozhikode for short period (1511–1525, until the Fall of Calicut), the English landed in 1615, followed by the French (1698) and the Dutch (1752). In 1765, Mysore captured Kozhikode as part of its occupation of Malabar Coast.

Sightseeing in Calicut / Kozhikode

Kozhikode Beach - The beach is easily accessible from city and affords pleasant views of the sunset. Two crumbling jetties, more than hundred years old, jut into the sea a reminder of the glorious trade this beach witnessed in its heyday.

Mananchira Square - Mananchira Square is the palace tank of King Vikrama, one of the great rulers in the region. It is situated in the heart of the city and is named after the Mananchira pond that spans an area of a square kilometre.
 

Kappad Beach - This is the place where Vasco-da-Gama set foot in India, on 27 May 1498 A.D, opening doors to trade with the Western world. A small stone monument at the beach has commemorated this landing.
 

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary - Located 25 kms from Kozhikode, the Kadlaundi Bird Sanctuary is a haven for migratory birds. Terns, Gulls, Herons, Sand pipers and other such migratory birds flock here from November through the end of April. The ideal time to go bird watching in the sanctuary is in the early hours of the day, from December to April.
 

Beypore - Beypore, one of the area's important ports and fishing harbours, is located 15 kms from Kozhikode. The town has been renowned for ship-building for over 1500 years and is still making wooden barges today.

Dolphin's Point - Dolphin's point is a beach, 2 kms from the centre of Calicut, where dolphins frolic in the sea in the wee-hours of the morning.
