CHERAI - Beach and Backwaters

Cherai which is a part of the greater Vypin Island and came into existence as a result of the great flooding of 1341. Cherai is home to a picturesque beach - Cherai beach. It is on the northern end of Vypin Island.

Cherai Beach is located in Vypin island, Kochi (Cochin). Cherai Beach is just 25 km from Kochi, the business capital of Kerala and 30 km from Cochin International Airport. The nearest towns are North Paravur (6 km) and Kodungallur (10 km) and the nearest railway station is Aluva (23 km).

The 15 km of long golden beach is clean, shallow and is one of the few places where one can experience the lagoon and ocean separated only by a few hundred meters.

The main attraction here is Cherai beach, the real combination of beach on one side and the back waters on the other and it is unique to Kerala. The greenery of long fringed coconut groves, infinitum of blue-sea raises your joy, pleasure and tranquility of mind.

Cherai Gowreeshwara Temple is one of the main Hindu temple to see here. Temple is mainatained by Vijnana Vardhini Sabha (V. V Sabha). It also known as Kerala palani. The festival in the temple is the biggest festival in Eranakulam district. The festival happens every year towards the last 2 weeks of January or first 2 weeks of February. The main attractions are Elephant march (comprising 20-30 elephants).

There is one more famous temple in Cherai, which is Azheekkal Sree Varaha Temple famous for its beautiful chariot. It is one of the oldest temple owned by Gowda Saraswatha Community.

How to reach Cherai?

By Air

Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport at a distance of about 23km from Cherai.

By Train

Nearest railway station is at Aluva 23 Km.away from cherai. Kochi hasTwo stations, Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town. Trains from other parts of India stop at Ernakulam Junction. Ernakulam is about 26 km away from Cherai.

By Road

Cherai is just 15 minutes drive from North Paravur (5km). It can be approached from Ernakulam either by taking a ferry to Vypeen Island which is 22km away (45 minutes by bus) from Cherai or taking the longer road route via Edappally to North Paravur and from there to Cherai, a distance of about 25km
 
Sightseeing near Cherai

Portuguese Fort - Built in1503 by the Portuguese also known as 'Aya Kotta'. It is the oldest European monument in India. It was an out post to safeguard the famous Mussiris Port. In 1661 the Dutch captured the fort and in 1789 the fort was handover to the King of Thiruvathankoor.

Pallipuram Church - The church is built by the Portuguese in 1577. The exquisite picture of Ave Mary on the top of "Altar" is brought from Portugal. The yearly celebrations of Lady of snow happens in August every year.

Munambam Beach - Munambam beach has been opened in mid of 2009.This tourist destination providing all modern facilities to the tourists like walkways, playground etc. People can enjoy the beauty of Munambam harbour also from this area. It is the tip-end of Ernakulam district and Vypeen Island.
