KHAJURAHO - sensual sculptures and more...
Located in the provincial state of Madhya Pradesh India. Khajuraho is known the world over for its temples, sex, architecture and sculpture. The construction of these Temples are thousand- year old took a little over two centuries, in terms of architecture of these temples, they form the high peak of the north Indian 'nagara' style. Of the 85 temples believed to have been built between the 9th and 12th centuries only 20 have survived, many in splendid condition, others having given way to the ravages of time and nature.
Khajuraho was, for many centuries, a small obscure village in
central India; in 1838 a British army engineer, captain T S Burt,
visited the area and rediscovered an extraordinary group of temples
built between the 10th and 12th centuries. Khajuraho is situated in
Madhya Pradesh, south of the gangetic plain and north of the rising
Deccan plateau. The expansive landscape of the state is cradled by
the Vindhya and Satpura hill ranges and watered by large rivers, the
Narmada and Chambal.

Khajuraho temples
Western Group of Temples The Western group is the main group of temples at Khajuraho and should be seen first if you have a limited time at hand. The western group has temples dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu. Most of the temples are built on high platforms with a tower. Under the tower is the garbha-griha, the altar for the main deity. In front of the altar is the mandapa (hall), where the devotees worship. There is usually an ardha mandapa (a porch) between the doorway and the mandapa in most of the interesting temples in India.
The Jain temples in the south eastern group are very similar in construction to the others. The Parsvanatha temple is the largest of these. There are also temples to Ghantai and Adinatha. Though most of the temple in this group belong to Jain faith, there are three Hindu temples in this group - Bhrama (Shiva), Vaamana, and Javari.
Southern Temples 5 km from the Khajuraho village, lies the Southern Group of temples. It has two main temples Chaturbhuja Temple (Jatkari Temple) and Duladeo Temple
