KUMARAKOM

The village of Kumarakom is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake in Kerala. Kumarakom is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. . The Vembanad Lake, the largest backwater in Kerala, is habitat for many marine and freshwater fish species and it teems with Karimeen (Pearl spot), shrimp (chemmeen in the local language) and prawns. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a noted bird sanctuary where many species of migratory birds visit and sanctuary itself extends over 14 acres. The Vembanad Lake with its majestic canals, streams and distributaries along its banks weave an intricate and enchantingly beautiful web.

Arundhati Roy's "The God of Small Things" is set in Ayemenem or Aymanam village, which adjoins Kumarakom.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary:
The main attractions are local birds like the waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron and the water duck, as well as the migratory Siberian cranes. Parrots, teal, larks, flycatchers, wood beetle, and other birds are seen here during their respective migratory seasons.

By Water
If you have arrived at Trivandrum International Airport, come to Kollam (Quilon) by road or rail (takes just about one hour). From there, you can take the regular ferry service to Alleppey (Alappuzha) - a long and delightful ride on Kerala's backwaters experiencing the daily way of life along the backwaters.
 

Boat Races

Boat races are held in connection with "Onam", the harvest festival of Kerala in the month of August/September. The 'Nehru Boat Race' named in honour of India's first Prime Minister , Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, is the most exciting of all the boat races. It is held on the second Saturday of August.
