ORISSA (Odisha)

Orissa (Odisha), is located on the east coast of India, by the Bay of Bengal with a coast line of 500 km. It is the modern name of the ancient kingdom of Kalinga, which was invaded by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka in 261 BC. A major turning point in world history took place in Orissa. The Kalinga War that led emperor Ashoka to embrace non-violence and the teachings of Buddha was fought here.

Orissa is a treasure troves of flora and fauna. Bhitar Kanika National Park is famous for its second largest mangrove ecosystem. The bird sanctuary in Chilika  and the tiger reserve and waterfalls in Simlipal National Park are integral part of any tours to Orissa. Orissa also has distinct tribal groups of indigenous people. Orissa has 62 distinct tribal groups, making it the largest collection of tribal people in a single state in the country and is characterised as subsistence oriented based mainly on collecting, hunting and fishing.
