PUDUCHERRY (PONDICHERRY)

The Union Territory of Puducherry comprises of four coastal regions viz- puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. Puducherry and Karaikal are situated on the East Coasts in Tamil Nadu, Yanam in Andhra Pradesh and Mahe on the West Coast in Kerala.

Ruled by the French for almost 300 years, Puducherry (also known as Pondicherry) enjoys a combination of French and Indian culture.

Puducherry has an interesting spiritual heritage too and is at a crossroads of eastern and western culture, and of ancient and modern spiritual disciplines. These movements converge in a practical manner in the twin communities of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville.

Pondicherry is synonymous with French Heritage in India and understandably so as it served as the capital of the French Colonies in India. The town was under French administration for centuries together and hence this place has a strong French feel in its architecture and monuments.
