Sariska

Sariska Tiger Reserve is well nestled in the Aravali Hills covering 800 sq km area divided into the grasslands, dry deciduous forests, sheer cliffs and rocky landscape. The park was like many other parks, the hunting reserve of the Royal family of Alwar Rajasthan . The reserve was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1958 and came under the "Project Tiger" as a Sariska tiger reserve in 1979.There is no village at Sariska, just the Tourist Bungalow and a hunting lodge of the Maharaja of Alwar, now a hotel.

Nearly 90% of the area in the sanctuary is covered with dhok trees accommodating various wildlife species. Also the Siliserh Lake on the edge of the park has a large number of crocodiles.

The Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary also houses the ruins of medieval temples of Garh-Rajor that date back to the 10th and 11th centuries.
 

How to reach Sariska?
The nearest main town to Sariska is Alwar (36kms)
The nearest Railway Station to the park is also located at Alwar 37km.
The nearest Airport to the park is located at Jaipur (110kms)
Delhi is about 200 Kms. It is a 3 hour journey via the Daruhera - Alwar - Sariska route.

Best time to visit
Sariska is open to visitors throughout the year, although certain jungle tracks are closed during the monsoon and the breeding season. The best time to visit the park is late in the winter around January or February. If you don’t mind the heat, April to June is a great time to see animals at the waterholes.

Rhesus, Macaque, Bengal Fox, Common Palm, Civet, Striped, Hyaena, Jungle Cat, Wild Boa, Nilgai Indian Porcupine, Hanuman Langur, Ratel, Small Indian Mongoose, Caracal, Leopard, Chital Four-horned Antelope, Indian Hare, Golden Jackal, Small Indian Civet, Indian Grey Mongoose, Tiger, Leopard, Cat, Sambar, Northern Palm Squirrel.

The avian world is also well represented with a rich and varied birdlife. These include Peafowl, Grey Partridge, Bush Quail, Sand Grouse, Tree Pie, Golden backed Wood Pecker, Crested Serpent Eagle and the Great Indian Horned Owl.

Kankawadi Fortt :
Among the historic landmarks located within the Sariska national park, includes the Kankwari Fort, where, Emperor Aurangzeb once imprisoned his brother, Dara Shikoh. A 17th century castle on a sharp hilltop at Kankwari, provides a panoramic view of flying Egyptian vultures and eagles.

The Ancient Shiva Temples :
Within the area of the Sariska tiger sanctuary, Neelkanth temples, that dates back to the 6th-13th century AD, now in ruins, afford a wonderful sight to the visitors.

The Palace :
Sariska was known as the royal reserve of the rulers of Alwar. This palace built by the Maharajas of Alwar, has now been converted into a hotel.
