VAGAMON (Wagamon)  -  a trekkers paradise

Vagamon also spelt as Wagamon is a hill station located at the fringe of the Western Ghats on Kottayam-Idukki border of Kerala, India. It is a warm and friendly place with cool climate as the temperature varies between 10 and 23 degree Celsius during a summer midday. It is situated 1,100 meters above sea level and is a trekkers paradise.

The chain of three hills - Thangal Hill, Murugan Hill and Kurissumala - is known for religious harmony. Each hill has its own myth associated with it. It is said that a Sufi saint called Sheikh Fariduddin came from Afghanistan and lived here some 800 years ago. After his death, the hill became known as Thangal hill, and the dargah of the saint Sheikh Fariduddin can still be seen. Next is Murugan hill, which houses a temple for lord Murugan. The third one, Kurissumala, has a church atop it. The dairy farm managed by the Kurisumala monks is worth a visit.

How to reach Vagamon (Wagamon)?

Vagamon is about 60 km from Kottayam, the nearest railhead. There are direct buses from Kottayam to Vagamon, but not many, the other option is to take a bus to Pala (30 km from Kottayam) and from there, take another bus to Vagamon. The journey from Pala by the banks of Meenachalaru (a famous river) provides a wonderful start to your journey.

It is located 33 Kilometers away from Palai and about 65 KM from Kottayam. Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport while the closest rail connection is Kottayam.

Places to see in Vagamon

Kurisumala Ashram, a monastery for Christian ascetics, who have belief in the Christianity along with the Indian spiritual beliefs, is worth visiting a place in Vagamon.
Kurisumala Ashram is at the heart of the Sahya Mountains, which run parallel to India's south west coast.

Vagamon Kurisumala

Kurisumala  is a Christian pilgrim centre and one of the main attractions at vagamon. The main day of attraction is on Good Friday. This is where hundreds of devotees from far and near converge during the holy week and after to climb the hill carrying wooden crosses.

Water falls

At Vagamon there are several waterfalls into the forest on one side and ending at the cliff on the other. The steep hill tract which provides access to the water fall area is along the ridges covered with pine forests and there can be many pavilions along that to enjoy rain, wind, and the infinite view of the hillscapes.
