YERCAUD
Yercaud is a hill station in Shevaroys range of hills in the Eastern Ghats in Salem District of Tamil Nadu, at an altitude of 1515 mtrs above the sea level. The highest point in Yercaus is the Servarayan temple at a height of 1623 mtrs.
Sir Thomas Muroe, erstwhile governor of Madras Presidency in 1842 found this place. David CockBurn, the Scottish collector of Salem district, between 1820 & 1829, was called the 'Father of Yercaud' because he helped in the development of the resources of the Shevaroy and for introducing the cultivation of coffee, pears and apple.
Some of the original forests continue to exist in the Yercaud hills and contain several endemic species of plants and fauna. The Yercaud hills have many faunal and floral similarities to the Western Ghats .

Must See in Yercaud
Yercaud Lake - Also called the "emerald lake" the first thing
that attracts a visitor in Yercaud is the lake. It is a picturesque
pool surrounded by gardens and well wooded trees. Boating in the
lake is enchanting as well as refreshing.
Lady's Seat - It overlooks the winding ghat road and provides a
breath - taking view. This view is spectacular at night with the
twinking lights of Salem town in sight. The Tourists can have a
panoramic view of the plains below through the telescope mounted at
the Lady's seat.
Arthur Seat - 1 km hike on a steep road from the Yercaud town
will take you to another wonderful spot Arthur Seat. This seat
offers you a striking view of the enchanting Big Lake, the entire
Yercaud town and the highest peak of Shevaroys Hills: the Servaroyan
peak.
The Servaroyan Temple - Situated atop Servaroyan hill, the
annual festival of Lord Servaroyan is celebrated in May every year.
The temple is a narrow and dark cave having the God Servarayan and
the Goddess Kaveri inside, which are believed as the deities of the
Shevaroy Hills and Cauvery River. Servaroyan temple is 7 km from
Yercaud and the uphill road passes through the spice gardens. The Grange - The Grange is one of the oldest buildings in Yercaud, built in 1820's by the then District Collector of Salem, M.D. Cockburn who first introduced coffee from Arabia and apples and other fruits from South Africa between 1820 and 1829. It is believed to have been the summer resort of Robert Clive, general of the East India Company in the late 19th century.
Bear’s Cave - A must visit place on the way to Servaroyan Temple is the Bear’s Cave situated near the Norton Bungalow. The Bear’s cave is now a private property so if you want to pay a visit to it, you must acquire prior permissionA temple situated near the cave is dedicated to Lord Murugan and natives believe that this temple is one of the six domiciles of that God. The central surface of the temple is artistically carved out of one single rock.
Killiyur Falls - The entity that makes the Shevaroys Hills even more alluring and appealing is the Killiyur Falls. Noteworthy for its 300 feet drop, this waterfall is just 3 km away from the Yercaud Lake. The best season to visit the Killiyur Waterfalls is after monsoon when the waterfalls are full with flickering water.
Silk Farm - A must visit place on the way to Lady’s seat is Silk Farm at a distance of just 2 km from the Yercaud Lake, this is one of the major tourist’s attractions of the town. Here one can observe how silkworms are bread and nurtured. In the premises of the farm mulberries are cultivated and silkworms are fed on mulberry leaves. Even the method and process of silk spinning can be seen here.
