Surrounded by the Aravalli Mountains, Ajmer, also known as
Ajaymeru, was the city once ruled by Prithviraj Chauhan and lies
on the lower slopes of Taragarh Hill. Ajmer is an oasis wrapped
in the green hills. The city was founded by Raja Ajay Pal
Chauhan in the 7th Century A.D.
Ajmer is a popular pilgrimage centre especially famous for the
Dargah Sharif-Tomb of the Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti,
which is equally revered by the Hindus and Muslims. Ajmer is a
centre of culture and education. The British chose Ajmer for its
prestigious Mayo College, a school exclusively for Indian
nobility. Ajmer is also the base for visiting Pushkar (11 km.),
the abode of Lord Brahma, lying to its west with a temple and a
picturesque lake. Also in Ajmer lies the palace of Akbar which
has now been converted to a museum.

By Air
The nearest airport is Jaipur, which is 135 kms away.
By Rail
Ajmer is located on the main Delhi-Jaipur-Ahmedabad-Mumbai line.
Most of the trains on this route stop at Ajmer. There is a daily
Shatabdi Express from Delhi to Ajmer.
By Road
Ajmer can be easily reached by road from both Jaipur and Delhi.
It is a nine-hour road-trip from Delhi to Ajmer.

Ajmer Dargah Sharif

The Dargah Sharif of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti is situated at the
foot of the Taragarh hill, and consists of several white marble
buildings arranged around two courtyards, including a massive gate
donated by the Nizam of Hyderabad, a mosque donated by the Mughal
emperor Shah Jahan, the Akbari Mosque, and the domed tomb of the
saint.
Taragah Fort -
The fort of Ajmer, seat of the Chauhan rulers, is claimed to be the
first hill fort of Asia and also one of the oldest hill forts of the
world. It was
built by King Ajaypal Chauhan on the summit of Taragarh Hill,
overlooking Ajmer. The walls of fort are 3 km
in circumference, and the fort can only be approached by steep and
very roughly paved slopes. When it came into the hands of the
British Raj, the fort was dismantled by order of Lord William
Bentinck, and was converted into a sanatorium for the troops
stationed at the British cantonment town of Nasirabad.
City Museum - Museum, was once the residence of Prince Salim, son of the Emperor Akbar, and presently houses a collection
of the Mughal and Rajput armour and sculpture. This residence of
Salim is of historical importance because Salim
as Emperor Jahangir read out the firman for trade to India to the
British East India Company from here, thus starting the chain of
events that lead to India's colonisation by the British. The museum
is at times is also called as Bharatpur Museum is home to a rich
collection of archaeological artifacts from the nearby old Bharatpur
state.
Mayo College -
Mayo college was established in 1875 by Lord Mayo, then Viceroy of
India. The architecture of the school buildings evoke the grandeur
of erstwhile princely Rajasthan. The main building of the school, in
white marble, is a classic example of Indo-Saracenic architecture.
The Anasagar Lake -
This historic man-made lake Ana Sagar lake was constructed by
Maharaja Anaji, the grandfather of Maharaja Prithviraj Chauhan. By
the lake is the Daulat Bagh, a garden laid out by Emperor Jahangir.
Emperor Shah Jahan later added five pavilions, known as the Baradari,
between the garden and the lake.
Lake Foy sagar -
Situated in the suburb of the city, Lake Foy Sagar is a picturesque
artificial lake named after the engineer Mr Foy, an Englishman, who
created it under a famine relief project. This artificial lake was
constructed in the year 1892. It offers the panoramic view of
the neighboring Aravalli mountains.
Pushkar -
Pushkar is a town in the state of Rajasthan in India near Ajmer,
about 23 Kilometers away, and is an important tourist destination.
Pushkar is famous for the Pushkar Lake and the 14th century Brahma
temple dedicated to Brahma, the godhead of the Hindu pantheon
supposed to be the creator of the universe. This is the most
celebrated site for the worship of Brahma. Pushkar is also famous
for its annual Pushkar Camel Fair.
Kishangarh - It is one of the largest markets for
marble and marble products.
