HIMACHAL PRADESH - Dev Bhumi (Land of Gods)
Himachal Pradesh is bordered by the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir on the north, Punjab on the west and south-west, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh on the south, Uttarakhand on the south-east and by the Tibet. The literal meaning of "Himachal Pradesh" is Region of snowy mountains.
The snow-capped peaks, lush green countryside, thick wooded forests, sparkling lakes, religious places and stunning promenades make Himachal Pradesh a paradise for tourists. Blessed with Nature's bounty and a salubrious climate, this state of India has been a popular tourism spot in the recent years. The ancient forts, colonial mansions, massive Havelis and heritage hotels look absolutely magnificent and are maintained and restored to their immaculate conditions.
Himachal Pradehs offers much for those looking to experience the Himalayas. It is also home to 32 sanctuaries, 2 National Parks and 3 Games Reserves.
In the southern Kangra valley, Dharamsala and sister town McLeodganj are the focus of the Dalai Lama's Tibetan government-in-exile.
Few points in Himachal are easily accessible by train. Then there are narrow-gauge railways from Pathankot (Punjab) to Kangra and Kalka (Haryana) to Shimla. This will take you through beautiful rural Himalayan regions. The ride beyond Kangra is amazing. You ride along the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas via Palampur and Baijnath to Joginder Nagar. On July 7, 2008, the Kalka-Shimla Railway was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the World Heritage Site "Mountain Railways of India".
Himachal has it all. rivers, lakes, forests, alpine meadows, treacherous passes, snow-peaked high mountains, valleys – simply ideal for a wide variety of adventure sports. Be it fishing for the mahseer, heli-skiing at sub-zero temperatures, ice-skating, teeing off in beautiful surroundings, gliding, or simply cherishing the joy of camping on a meadow next to a stream – the outdoors person will not be found wanting in Himachal Pradesh.
